METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE
The best methods of removing gum from concrete depends on how long the gum has been there and the level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it has not penetrated the surface, we might be able to get it off by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.
The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a more forgiving consistency compared to a gooey and sticky glob. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum. Next we slide the scraper very slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.
The above method is only possible with brand new gum.
When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we won’t use high pressure because that could harm the surface of the concrete!
Our crew never uses any more pressure than necessary to safely clean commercial concrete surfaces. These types of surfaces can be destroyed much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can take up to 100 years to cure.
